My talented buddy Joni of Cote de Texas is not just a gifted designer with fabulous taste she has the brains to back it up!
You must tread the post she has written detailing the strong arm tactics of the ASID in the State in Florida and around the country. If you are not a member of ASID you should be outraged by their thinly veiled propaganda and cash backed lobbying to put themselves in the position to gain financial control of our industry. If you are a member of ASID you should be concerned where your dues are going and what effect the actions of this organization are having on the industry and your own ability to practice your chosen profession.

I read her post this morning and it made me frown. I suppose, let's see, Sister Parish, Elise de Wolfe, Rose Cumming, John Fowler, Sibyl Colefax, Dorothy Draper, Geoffrey Bennison, Nancy Lancaster.... wouldn't be able to "practice" their art in Florida either. I could keep adding names, but I'm tired of typing.
Hi - It's not just Florida - 4 states have the practice law. While you can practice on residential homes - you can not use the word designer anywhere - or a web site, a business card, a contract, a car sign (!), telephone book (there aren't Interior decorators in the yellow pages that I know of) or risk being fined upwards of $10,000. At least 27 states have Title regulations - you may not use the term Interior Designer without the license. ASID has stated they want to move on to regulating residential work too eventually. And they want to own the term designer. And I want to go on a diet - what's with those boobs? OH God help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah, I read about it and its just ridiculous. Quite a fierce post from Joni and I loved it.
In place where I am allowed I use the term Interior Designer... in other places where I am afraid to use "the term" I use Interior Decorator since I am not a member of ASID. I commented on Joni's posting.
It is impossible to regulate 'The Arts'. But, I hear from Joni it is happening. How can this be? What's next? Photographers. Painters. Textile Artists. This is absolutely ridiculous. I thought we lived in the 'most' democratic continent in the world! I guess we really don't have much freedom at all and that makes this Liberty Gal sad. Joni...some women pay to get that look! Be happy. Show some gratitude will ya!
This upsets me so much. What can we do to stop this? I hope more bloggers write about this. Keep up the good work.
this post was very interesting ! All the american designers should come to France , it is much easier and before I've thought it was not !
Just a tiny and respectful correction to Joni's post on June 23: there are only three states with practice acts. The fourth was Alabama, the first state to get a practice act in 1979. After a protracted court battle on behalf of Ms. Diane Lupo who was convicted of practicing design without a license because she specified colors and accessories, Ms. Lupo prevailed through the courts all the way to the Alabama Supreme Court who threw out the practice act last fall on the basis that it was unconstitutional. You may be able to read that decision on the Alabama Supreme Court website.
That said, even three practice acts are three too many.
Respectfully offered.
0h, and did I mention that in Alabama, the penalty for breaking this law was $10,000 AND/OR one year in jail? Now, THAT's ridiculous.
Will do. Running over right now Jackie Blue. I'm not a designer, but have friends who are! Thank you for this.
Hope you are well!
